About the Butterfly Floating Trophy and Designer/Artist Jerome Salle
From an early age I have always liked making things, this could be anything, from nailing two pieces of wood together to bending wire into whatever shape I needed, the idea of taking raw or recycled materials and turning them into something completely different to start a new life fascinated me. I have an inherent love of metal work, specifically forging, the process of heating metal in a forge and moving and shaping it with a hammer and anvil. I started out with a charcoal forge made from a baking tray and a hair dryer and a beautiful old anvil I got from an elderly family friend that no longer needed it on their farm in Kenya, an anvil I still use to this day. From then on I was hooked and have slowly been adding to my collection of tools and knowledge as the years have gone by.
When I was asked to join the World Jenny’s Day team to create a trophy for the Get Fit For Jenny 79 event, I knew it was something I had to do, having battled with mental health issues myself for the last 8 years it felt great to work with an organisation that was helping raise awareness for something that is still treated with an unfair stigma in many parts of the world. The inspiration for the trophy came first and foremost from the World Jenny’s Day Logo; a beautiful multi coloured butterfly that really illustrated the inner beauty all of us have.
I decided it should be a combination of wood and metal, with the outer frame being formed from flat steel bar and the painted inlays carved from wood. The frame came together well after many hours of bending, adjusting, bending and so on. After welding and grinding I decided that it would benefit from having smooth inside corners to allow the lines to flow. I did this by using car body filler and forming it into smooth radii. The wooden pieces came together smoothly and the vivid acrylic colours really made them pop. The base was an old block of cedar I had in my workshop for years and I could not think of a better reason to use it than for this special project. After taking the old, scuffed surfaces off, sanding the sides to a high grit and applying a clear finish, the gorgeous but subtle grain was spectacular.
Overall I am very happy with how the trophy has come out and I can’t wait to see all the sides filled with the names of the remarkable people helping with such a wonderful cause!
